Whether it’s a new sofa, a full-size appliance, or fine jewelry for a special occasion, a high sticker price often makes consumers pause before they buy. However, Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) options have matured from niche offerings to key components of the modern checkout experience, driven by demand for greater payment flexibility.

BNPL solutions allow merchants to help customers access the products they need without the financial burden. This can also benefit merchants in the form of increased sales lift, greater shopper frequency, and fewer abandoned carts. That said, providing this flexibility traditionally hasn’t been that simple for merchants. It often involves several technical hurdles that slow time to value.

With a seamless integration at checkout, Verifone and Affirm solve this problem for merchants, bringing BNPL into a fast, familiar checkout experience that's scalable across both eCommerce and brick-and-mortar environments.

Integrating Buy Now, Pay Later into everyday commerce experiences  

Merchants using standalone BNPL solutions often have to manage several custom integrations outside their primary payment gateway or point-of-sale (POS) platform. However, Verifone’s expansive footprint across more than 165 countries and omnichannel presence mean merchants who already use the Verifone payment terminal can easily provide this flexible payment option as it's available to them. Affirm’s powerful network of more than ​64​ million shoppers complements these capabilities, giving merchants access to high-intent shoppers.

“Buy Now, Pay Later is increasingly becoming a default payment method, not an alternative ​one​,” says Harrison Siegel, director of partner growth at Affirm. “Bringing Affirm into checkout creates a seamless experience where customers feel empowered to buy.”

Setup is easy for merchants. Affirm is built into Verifone Cloud Services as an advanced payment method. Merchants can work with their Verifone representative to learn more about the integration.​​

How the Verifone-Affirm solution works

When a customer checks out, they can select Affirm on the PIN pad, scan a QR code, and complete their purchase. Online merchants who use the Verifone payment gateway can also offer Affirm at checkout, giving customers a true omnichannel experience and a convenient, trusted payment alternative to credit cards.

Because this experience is embedded into customers’ payment flow, there’s minimal disruption to existing checkout processes. Using Affirm doesn’t require any extra steps for merchants, either. They receive funds just as they would with any other payment method.

Affirm also uses smart underwriting to assess each shopper's ability to pay​ for that specific transaction, at that moment in time​. ​Unlike ​other BNPL providers, Affirm ​does not charge late or hidden fees, and only approves consumers it believes can and will repay. This approach gives consumers more clarity and peace of mind about what they owe and when, which in turn helps drive more ​ purchases, higher order values, and better conversion rates for merchants.

Merchants who use Affirm at checkout can experience a 70% sales lift and 28% less cart abandonment compared to other BNPL solutions.

Verifone and Affirm’s partnership can benefit merchants across a wide range of categories, Siegel says.

Retailers with high-value purchases and assisted sales, such as home goods, furniture, appliance, and electronics stores, can offer the Verifone-Affirm solution to help customers spread bigger buys over longer periods. These purchases can then become more attainable for customers.  

Merchants who offer premium experiences, such as those in the live events and entertainment industry, can use this joint solution to reduce upfront costs for consumers and increase their purchasing power to boost sales.

“Our ability to offer payment options that are affordable, fair, and transparent and don't change—along with no late fees to the customer—is a really powerful tool,” Siegel says.

Verifone and Affirm can also propel omnichannel growth for merchants. Today’s shoppers often browse online but buy in-store and vice versa. With this integration, merchants can deliver a seamless pay-over-time experience across channels. This capability is especially beneficial during the holiday shopping season, when customers might research a product online and then make their final purchasing decision in-store.

Retailers who offer Affirm both online and in-store see strong repeat usage, with omnichannel users showing 3.1 times higher repeat rates, according to Affirm data from July 2024–June 2025.

Price hesitation at checkout is a common reason for abandoned sales. By offering transparent monthly or biweekly payment options, Affirm can help shoppers commit with confidence.
