Velocity Logic is connecting payments, loyalty, and real-time purchase behavior to help fuel and convenience retailer engage more customers. Its partnership with Verifone is helping bring those experiences to market and scale them across thousands of sites.
For fuel and convenience retailers, loyalty has traditionally started with a familiar requirement: identify the customer.
A loyalty number. An app. A phone number. A card linked to a rewards account.
But what about everyone else?
Velocity Logic is rethinking that model by helping retailers turn the payment itself into an opportunity to understand and engage customers.
The company specializes in loyalty and consumer engagement for fuel and convenience retail, with solutions spanning loyalty program management, real-time enrollment, personalized offers and pay-with-points. At the center is a simple video: use data and data technology to make loyalty more relevant to the customer and more valuable to the retailer.
Delivering that vision, however, requires more than loyalty technology.
Payments, point of sale, forecourt systems, processors, loyalty program, and other technology all intersect during a single customer journey. Velocity Logic doesn’t control every part of that environment.
“There are a lot of different companies and a lot of different devices or software involved in fuel retail,” says Vik Mehta, Head of Business at Velocity Logic. “We have to work with many, many partners ultimately to get that really crisp, clean consumer experience.”
Its longstanding partnership with Verifone is helping Velocity Logic connect those pieces and create loyalty experiences that previously would have been difficult to deliver.
One of the biggest opportunities is connecting payments and loyalty in real time.
Through its integration with Verifone, Velocity Logic can tokenize a payment credential and associate it with purchase behavior. The payment card can effectively become a loyalty identifier, creating a way to understand behavior and deliver value when a customer hasn’t identified through a traditional loyalty program.
That opens a much wider opportunity for engagement.
Velocity Logic can use purchase behavior to understand what customers are buying and identify opportunities to deliver more relevant offers. It can also help retailers engage customers beyond the portion of their audience already enrolled in a loyalty program.
The payment interaction itself can even become an acquisition channel.
With Velocity Logic’s real-time enrollment capabilities, a customer who isn’t already. A loyalty member can be identified during the transaction and presented with an incentive to join. At the pump, that customer can provide a phone number, agree to the terms and enroll in the program as part of that experience.
“Experiences like that weren’t really enabled before the integration,” Mehta says.
Another example is pay-with-points.
Instead of loyalty existing as a separate step around the transaction, payment becomes part of how the customer is recognized, rewarded, and engaged.
Creating a new loyalty experience is one challenge. Making it practical to deploy across a large retail network is another.
For Velocity Logic, integration with Verifone Commander helps create a repeatable path to scale.
“When the answer comes back as, ‘We have Commander at our sites,’ there’s a sense of relieve within our organization,” Mehta says. “We know pretty easily that we can set it up and get off the ground fairly quickly.”
That matters in an industry where bringing new technology to market can otherwise be a lengthy process.
“In the fuel retail space, the timelines are in years, not in months,” Mehta says. “With Verifone, it was months.”
In one recent project involving Velocity Logic, Verifone and a customer, the teams worked through a structured integration and certification process within weekly calls, defined timelines and dedicated resources. Mehta says the work could progress in 8- to 12-week sprints – “light years compared to what we see in the market.”
Once that integration is established, the opportunity extends well beyond a single retailer or location.
Velocity Logic has approximately 13,000 sites live on its platform and 23,000 contracted. With the Verifone integration in place, Mehta says scaling to 5,000 sites in a matter of months is now realistic compared with historically having to approach deployment site by site.
For Velocity Logic, that means innovation doesn’t have to stop at the proof of concept. New loyalty capabilities can have a path into the market at meaningful scale.
Connected payment and purchase behavior also creates another opportunity: more intelligent engagement.
Static loyalty offers have traditionally treated broad groups of customers similarly. With a richer understanding of purchase behavior, Velocity Logic can create more precise segments and identify which offers are more likely to provide value to individual customers.
That can extend beyond known loyalty members.
By using payment as another way to recognize behavior, Velocity Logic sees an opportunity for retailers to understand and engage a much broader portion of their customer base.
And as the technology evolves, the data foundation becomes increasingly important.
Velocity Logic is already looking toward greater use of machine learning and AI to analyze purchase behavior and automate how relevant offers are selected and delivered.
For Mehta, however, the future of AI-driven loyalty starts with something more fundamental: the infrastructure required to make the right data usable.
“The future starts with data and the underlying plumbing,” Mehta says. “Having Verifone and Velocity together starts to build the pipes to create the consumer experiences we want to have.”
That creates a progression from identifying customer and understanding behavior to delivering increasingly individualized engagement — whether at the pump, inside the store, or through other digital touchpoints.
The technology is only one part of what has allowed Velocity Logic and Verifone to expand what’s possible.
Velocity Logic has worked with Verifone across multiple projects and companies over the years. Throughout that relationship, Mehta points to collaboration as one of its defining characteristics.
“Verifone listens to what we’re trying to accomplish for the retailer and the consumer,” Mehta says. “They’re willing to adjust their technology to help us get there.”
Rather than treating integration as a fixed technical exercise, the teams can start with the experience they’re trying to create and determine what needs to happen behind the scenes to make it possible.
“We work for different companies, but we’re trying to solve the same puzzle,” Mehta says. “There are no egos in the room. We’re just people trying to make a better experience for consumers.”
For Velocity Logic, that collaboration has helped turn new loyalty concepts into real capabilities, create a faster path to deployment and establish the infrastructure to keep building.
And Mehta’s advise to other companies considering the Verifone ecosystem is simple:
“Have your vision in mind of what you’re trying to work on. Bring that to the team at Verifone.”
Because the opportunity isn’t simply to integrate another solution.
It’s to build what loyalty can become next.
