The Challenge
To create a simple and easy way for people to donate to non-profit organizations

Cancer Research UK receives no government funding, so its life-saving research is only possible thanks to the generosity of its supporters.

Cancer Research UK has hundreds of retail stores on high streets across the UK. They take in clothes, goods, and, of course, donations over the counter. But many UK high streets are now dominated by charity shops, so innovation is a major factor to consider in making a Cancer Research UK shop the first choice for consumers.

stores across the UK

Following research and several tests, Verifone adapted a VX 820 PIN pad by placing it in a glass screen. The VX 820 was specially commissioned to sit in the store window in four locations—High Street Kensington, Marylebone, Brighton, and Guilford—allowing shoppers and tourists to “tap and donate” from the pavement outside. Cancer Research UK shops are only open during the day, but the special window display with the integrated payment device allowed the public to donate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Using their contactless credit or debit card, supporters were able to make an instant £2 donation to Cancer Research UK. The act of donating also activated a special video in the store window, showing a scientist getting to work and highlighting to the supporter the positive impact their donation would have.

The payment innovation for Cancer Research UK was a true team effort. Verifone joined forces with Out of Home media owner Clear Channel UK, world leading media agency MediaCom, and self-service technology experts 10 Squared to deliver the solution.

The Verifone VX 820 meets all PCI PTS 3.0 standards ensuring the utmost security and peace of mind for consumers.

Four stores were initially selected as a trial for shop-window donations, nearly 70,000 people in total engaged with the campaign—almost a sixth of all passers-by in the two-week live period. The campaign also drove great brand awareness and supported engagement online, across PR, and social media.

Verifone’s multi-channel Payment as a Service (PaaS) solution bundles hardware, software, payment gateway, and support services into a single, integrated offering that is pre-certified with major acquirers. Among the benefits are:

  • Secure payment acceptance across all sales channels

  • All-in-one solution that removes payment complexity

  • Reduced total cost of payment ownership

  • Seamless, secure payment acceptance, and transaction management

  • Client services, consulting, training, and help desk support
