Planet: Environmental Compliance & Sustainability
Verifone supports efforts to minimize the environmental impact of our products, operations, and supply chain. Through our Environmental Compliance Program, we work with our suppliers, manufacturers and partners to reduce waste and implement sustainable practices throughout the product lifecycle from design to disposal.
Product Design and Production
Verifone has incorporated environmental requirements into our product design processes to address new and existing regulatory requirements, as well as, customer specifications. Environmental considerations in product design include material substitution to remove substances of concern, and energy efficiency design for power suppliers. We also work with our contract manufacturers to ensure production processes comply with applicable environmental requirements, including use of unleaded soldering paste and RoHS compliant material handling procedures.
Quality and Environmental Management
Verifone’s contract manufacturers share our commitment to sound quality and environmental management practices and maintain ISO 9001 (Quality Management) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) certifications.
Verifone works with our suppliers and contract manufacturers to comply with applicable legislation that restricts hazardous substances, including the European Union's (EU) Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive and the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemical Substances (REACH). By limiting the use of hazardous substances and certain heavy metals in products and packaging, contamination from electronic waste is reduced.
Through our Environmental Compliance Program, Verifone monitors the hazardous substance lists and requires suppliers to report and disclose the presence of RoHS and REACH designated substances to Verifone. Verifone uses an independent laboratory in the United States to test new products prior to release to confirm that hazardous substances are absent or below identified thresholds. A Declaration of Conformity detailing compliance with relevant directives and specifications is included with each product delivery.
Verifone supports efforts to reduce waste and toxic materials in packaging. As part of our Environmental Compliance Program, suppliers provide declarations of conformity regarding the levels of heavy metals (e.g., lead, mercury) in packages and packaging material. Verifone also works with our contract manufacturers to reduce packaging waste, to increase use of recyclable materials and to remove ozone depleting substances from packaging materials. Additional information is provided on the Declaration of Conformity and as marked on package materials.
E-Waste & Recycling
Verifone shares the global concerns over electronic waste getting into landfills, causing contamination of ground water and creating other environmental issues.
The European Union’s Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive, 2012/19/EU of July 2012 is implemented through national regulations in all EU member states, as well as in Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and Iceland.
WEEE Directive 2012/19/EU requires producers of electrical and electronic equipment to finance the takeback and recycling of their products placed on the EU market after August 13, 2005. In compliance with the Directive, VeriFone products are labelled with the crossed-out "wheelie-bin" symbol, indicating that the product was placed on the market after August 13, 2005 and that end users should separate the product from other waste at end of life.
Verifone supports the aims of the WEEE Directive to improve the environmental management of electrical waste, to reduce potentially harmful effects of hazardous substances, and to contribute to a circular economy.
For Verifone products sold within the European Union, please refer to your sales agreement or contact your local sales representative (from whom you purchased the product) for proper disposal instructions. Additional information on end-of-life product management is available on the Verifone Recycling page.
