The Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr GmbH (RNV) is the urban public transport provider in the metropolitan Rhein-Neckar area, comprising the main cities of Heidelberg, Mannheim, and Ludwigshafen.
It was important to support all popular and local card types, such as GeldKarte, girocard, Maestro, V PAY, and major credit cards. Additionally, RNV emphasised security and sustainability as key selling points for the solution choice in this investment project. The requirements of the modernisation project also included built-in support for contactless payment options.
To help RNV overcome their challenge, Verifone partnered with Xerox Business Services, a solution provider for ticketing systems, to supply around 200 ticket machines across the transport region serviced by RNV. Verifone provided payment terminals that were compliant with the latest security standards.
Xerox integrated Verifone’s modular UX Solutions self-service series, including the UX 100 PIN pad, UX 300 card reader/controller, and UX 400 contactless card reader. The UX Solutions series provided a significant advantage, as the mechanical interfaces are compatible; the UX terminal may be used in principle as a substitute for the previous Artema series by Verifone, without any extensive software updates required.
The UX Solutions series meets the requirements of a modern and sustainable ticketing machine—thanks to its cost-effectiveness, transaction security, low maintenance, and rugged protection against vandalism. Accessibility has also been greatly improved; the user interface is optimised and leads the passenger through the programme using clear visual and audio prompts.
Now, over 200 Xerox ticket machines in the metropolitan Rhein-Neckar area are equipped with modules from the UX Solutions series. The project has run smoothly, as participants are satisfied with the integration, modification, and installation stages. A big reason for this success is excellent cooperation between Xerox, Verifone, and the network service provider.
