The Key to EMV

EMV is a security framework that defines the payment interaction at the physical, electrical, data and application levels between chip cards and payment devices. These interactions are often referred to as EMV Level 1 and 2 requirements. EMVCo was created by the payment networks to be a neutral party in making this standard framework.

How Does it Work?

Smart cards are embedded with a chip that is encrypted with data. EMV-enabled devices have the ability to read data stored on a chip within the card. During the transaction authorization process, strong cryptographic functions are used to validate the authenticity of the card and cardholder.

Best of all, when a customer pays using an EMV-enabled device, the device is instantly identified as an authentic, approved payment instrument through a process called dynamic authentication. When used with a PIN, the chip proves that the customer is paying with his or her own card.

By using chips as an active part of the payment transaction, EMV cards and devices help prevent credit card fraud from stolen account numbers and cloned payment cards.

What do the dates mean?

Payment card networks in the US have provided guidance on how EMV is to be implemented and the incentives associated with migration to EMV for all payment card participants which includes merchants, acquirers and issuers.  The key date chart provides a summary of those incentives.

Global Impact

Has EMV made a difference in other parts of the world?

Yes. Interac, the only debit network in Canada, EMV has reduced losses from skimming by 73 percent in the last three years.

According to the press release, “Interac debit card fraud skimming losses plummet to lowest level on record” stated that “Interac debit card fraud losses, as a result of skimming, are the lowest on record since 2003 – decreasing to $38.5 million in 2012 from a high of $142 million in 2009.”

While there are different security methods that can be used to secure cards, chip technology is difficult to copy and reproduce. Countries that have leveraged Interac Flash have been protected against skimming, counterfeiting, and transaction replay types of fraud, including electronic pick-pocketing where readers are used to capture information.

Contact vs. Contactless

How does EMV Contactless differ from EMV Contact?

EMV Contact and Contactless vary by consumer use and technology.

EMV Contact

  • Cards are inserted into the chip card (ICC) reader and remain until the transaction is completed
    • Different from what consumers are accustomed to today
  • Data is read from and written to the chip during a transaction so the card is updated each time it is used
  • Transactions will likely be processed online in the U.S., but offline transaction processing is possible

EMV Contactless

  • Contactless cards must be placed in close proximity to the contactless reader (typically ½ to 3 inches and remain only momentarily
    • Transaction is completed after the card has been removed from the contactless field
  • Dual interface cards access the same chip for processing via contact or contactless read
  • Contactless card usage is typically used for transaction speed and convenience 

Differences After Implementation

What other differences should we expect?

EMV transactions take more time than non-EMV because there is more data to process.  Also for EMV contact, the card remains in the device during the entire transaction – no more swipe and place your card back in your wallet.  The POS device will prompt the cardholder to insert and remove the card at the appropriate time. EMV contactless transactions are still swipe-and-go.
